About

Originally from a small town in Upstate New York, Massimo Avanzato is currently located in New York City attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to receive a BFA in Photography and a minor in English Writing. His body of work ranges from videography, photography, and poetry, to songwriting, and sound design. Massimo's diaristic work dissects the complex layers of his identity and self to visually capture the essence of an emotion or state of mental being.

He was a featured artist in Issue 47 (September-October 2018) of Noisy Rain, an online gay arts magazine. In 2019, his piece “Paradise Lost,” a queer re-telling of the story of Adam and Eve, was shown at the Sonder III Exhibition in New York City. His work was also shown in China at the 2019 Pingyao Photo Festival. "Narcissus In The Summer," a zine composed of original poems layered over composited Macbook self-portraits, was created for FIT’s Art and Design Gallery’s online 2020 exhibition, Intimacy. “Outfits I Got Harassed In” was shown in FIT’s 2020 online photography student group show, Lost Connection. In both 2020 and 2021, his work was picked to be shown in SUNY’s annual LGBT Pride art exhibition. His 2021 submission was hand-selected to be displayed in the SUNY Administration Building (Chancellor's Office) in Albany, New York. In 2022, his video piece, "There Are Fireflies Beneath My Chest," was shown at Homage, a pop up gallery in partnership with On The Fringe, in TriBeCa, New York. Massimo was chosen as the recipient of Adolescent's April 2022 Filmmaker/Video Grant.

He interned for Phoebe James, a teen accessory brand, in 2018 focusing on product and lifestyle photography for their social media. Since 2019,  he has been a student assistant for the Gallery Curator at FIT’s Art & Design Gallery. His most recent internship (Spring 2022) with NVAK Collective, a next generation record label and artist advocacy collective, allowed him to create visual art within the music industry.
